The first Japanese migration to the Amazon was in 1929, and 2019 marked the 90th anniversary. The aim was to grow cacao, but not only did it suffer from unfamiliar climate, vegetation, language and customs, but many lives were lost to endemic diseases such as malaria. In the face of many difficulties, the Japanese have developed the cultivation of jute hemp and pepper, and now the cultivation of fruit trees such as acerola, cupuas, acai and pitaire has become popular. In this way, Japanese society has contributed to the forefront of regional development, such as hospital construction, electrification and telephone construction, and establishment of public schools and universities.
